This is why, in my humble opinion, players have to rely on the use of golf etiquette that goes beyond the basics and includes the players ‘Character’ . An honest attitude being displayed by those taking part also looms large on the greens.

“Nothing Written In Stone…”

There are, of course, no rules of etiquette written in stone but:

  1. Common Courtesy;
  2. Great Sportsmanship;
  3. and Consideration Towards Others Will Never Be Wasted On The Links!

Please remember friends, that these ‘character’ traits should be modeled by all golf players regardless of their level of play.

“Pay Attention…!”

Accidents should be prevented at all times. If, for example, there is a chance you will hit someone when you take your shot, you should wait until you are sure the coast is clear.

“Are You An Adult or A Child…?”

Similarly, throwing your club or another piece of equipment around, however excited or frustrated you may be is simply not following the rules of golfing etiquette.

“Be Aware of the Rules…”

Familiarizing yourself with the rules of play is essential. If you are unsure about something all you need to do is ask. This is even more relevant if you are playing at a new venue or if You are a novice as far as the game of golf is concerned.

Other players need you to be silent when they are lining up a putt or taking a shot. You should always remove the flag from the hole if your ball is the nearest one to the hole allowing play to continue in a smooth manner.

“Order of Play…”

As far as tournament golf is concerned, when each player has hit their drives, the golfer who is the furthest away from the hole should take the first turn. Sometimes though, when four people are playing a friendly game of golf things can be speeded up somewhat by those involved being in agreement of playing ready golf instead.

“More About ‘Ready Golf’…”

With ready golf, if it is safe to continue, golfers can take their next shot no matter what position they are in on the course.

“Plan Your Shots Ahead…”

Looking beyond just basic golf etiquette, we see that the game of golf also involves planning your shot before you reach your ball.

“I Say Old Chap, Have You Seen My Place…?”

If you should lose your place, then let the group behind you play through. Pick up your ball and volunteer your score for that particular hole.

“Decision Of ‘Character’…”

Should play become seriously congested, your newly acquired view of golf etiquette dictates you abandon your ball if you consider this action to be necessary.

If you suspect the ball is lost then take a shot at a provisional ball to save a little time.

“Take Care of the Golf Course…”

It is important to preserve the tee by fixing any ball marks and putting back or repairing your divots.

“Those Little Extras…”
