Golf Stroke Play
“You Will Look Like A Pro With
These Hot Golf Tips…”
In the last lesson entitled, Golf Match Play You learned one type of golf game. In this lesson You will learn about Golf Stroke Play.
“Golf Stroke Play…”
Traditional golf involves the use of golf stroke play in professional tournaments. There are a few variations of this type of play but the basic format to be followed is detailed below.
“Par and Difficulty…”
Par is calculated on the perceived difficulty of each hole with shorter holes being par 3 and the longer ones being par 4 or 5. Your golf score is tallied up by the number of shots you need to take to get the ball into the hole so it’s possible that you can be victorious over your opponent on every hole by multiple shots. An example of this would be if it takes two shots for you to get your ball into a par 3 hole, your score for that hole will be 1 under par. Known as a birdie, this is a reasonably common kind of score for a hole.
“Making Par…”
When a player gets the ball into the hole with four shots on a par 4 hole, it’s called making par. In this instance your score will remain the same as it was before you started playing this particular hole. If you are good enough to get the ball into the hole by using two shots less than the par allocation, your score will drop by two and this is referred to as an eagle. During match play for example, you may lose a hole by six shots but this only counts as one hole being lost. With golf stroke play, the winner is determined by looking at the overall game score as opposed to which player won the most holes. Instead of one bad hole ruining your game of golf players are given the opportunity to balance things out and play evenly throughout the round.
“Don’t Get Ahead of Yourself…”
In golf stroke play, when your opponent plays a quality shot you have to make sure you continue in your usual play mode because if you try to keep up with his level of play on that hole, you are likely to make serious mistakes and turn your game into a downward spiral.
Taking an aggressive stance at this point means you may send your putt way past the hole and this could leave you in a very difficult position as far as your next move goes.
“Keeping Track of Your Score…”
Whatever your age and whether you play alone or with another golfer, this scoring system can be easily used to keep track of your score. You can also use this method to see how your game is improving by checking it against previously recorded scores.
“Recap…”
In this brief “Public” version, you learned a small amount about the order of play and the essential parts of the golf stroke play.
